GARW S.B.G.C. LADIES FOOTBALL

Many people will not yet be aware that the Garw Club has now developed its’ own ladies team, but the Team has been running since September 2005. Paul and Jackie Harris were the moving forces behind this major event, as for the first time in its’ history the Garw S.B.G.C provided a ladies-only sporting facility.

Girls have, of course, played mini-football within the Club for a number of years, but were always forced to stop playing with the boys at age 12. We always felt that this was a sad state of affairs, as many young girls have fully enjoyed playing the game and there was nowhere in the Garw Valley for them to move on to and most then drifted away from the game.

However, we now have our own team, and, thanks to the efforts of Paul and Jackie, and the girls who have travelled in from other areas, they have begun to play fairly regularly this season. Paul and Jackie would like to thank all their enthusiastic members for their support in these early and often difficult days!

So far, only three fixtures have been played, resulting in a 5-4 win over Maesteg, a 9-1 victory over Brynna and a 0-5 defeat against Cascade – and both Brynna and Cascade play regular League football! Starring in the Brynna game were Nicole Angove and Natasha Lockyer, who scored hat-tricks apiece, Rebecca Struthers, who scored twice, and Hannah Smart, who knocked in the other. The basis of a good side has been laid and, with time, we are sure that things will get even better for these eager ladies!

The current team is: Teri-Leigh Harris, Amy Lewis, Laura Worrall, Rebecca Struthers, Chloe Walbyoff, Emily Bethell, Hayley Sage, Hannah Smart, Katie Tantum, Natasha Lockyer, Nicole Angove, Kerry McNamara, Rebecca Sage and Sorrell Denby.

Anyone interested in joining for summer training and (hopefully) League football next year should contact Jackie or Paul Harris on (01656) 871 670.

Training is currently at Pontycymmer Leisure Centre on Tuesday evenings from 7-8 p.m. but will move outdoors in summer.

Finally, Jackie and Paul would like to thank all the girls who have played thus far and the parents and grandparents who have helped out with travelling and in supporting the team.
