At the time of writing the Under-11 Team is in its’ final month of football for the 2005-6 season. The Team plays in the Bridgend & District Mini-football set-up, which encourages youngsters from the age of 7 upward to take part in organised football but without the pressure of league competition.
In addition, the teams play 8-a-side on much-reduced pitches (about 1/3 size) and use small goalposts. Matches are usually no longer than 20 minutes in length (2 x 10 minute halves), matches tend to be played in “round-robins” with 2, 3 or 4 other clubs, and are refereed by team coaches in turn. There are no offsides or penalties, and children are encouraged to play for the fun of the game rather than to win. Team coaches are qualified and approved by the Mini-football organisation. Boys and girls play together at this level and arrangements are always made to ensure privacy etc. Safety is always the first and last concern of coaches and parents are encouraged to take an active part in games.
Having said that, this season has seen the under-11 team play some wonderful football and win many of their games. A strong team has emerged, and most will no doubt make the transition into the more competitive under-12 team next year.
Of course, this means that we will be looking for new players for this age group next season, and children of 11 and under are welcome to join in our training sessions. These will be held every Thursday from 23rd March at BLAENGARW RUGBY FIELD in Blaengarw, from 5.15 to 6.30 p.m. Players should bring their own kit and boots.
